Joi Rodriguez, a 50-year-resident of Norman, Oklahoma, was
driving a truck pulling a horse trailer shortly after 1:30
p.m. on March 14, 2011 near mile marker 88 when the front
right tire on her pick-up truck deflated, according to the
Florida Highway Patrol media release. The deflation was caused
by tread separation.
Rodriguez lost control and headed toward a concrete culvert,
where her truck overturned and continuted to travel toward
a tree.

She was critically injured and flown to Sacred Heart Hospital
for treatment.
Of the six horses in the trailer, three were dead and one
had to be euthanized due to its crippling injuries. The two
surviving horses were taken to Alaqua Animal Refuge for treatment.
I-10 was closed to traffic for several hours.
No charges are pending in the accident.
Rodriguez was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol will investigate the accident.
Alaqua Animal Refuge, Williamson Veterinary Center, DeFuniak
Springs Fire Rescue, the Argyle Volunteer Fire Department,
Walton County Fire Rescue, the Walton County Sheriff's Office,
the DeFuniak Springs Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol
and the Florida Department of Transportation all responded
to the wreck.
